Queer reading materials: Cisgender Privileges, Cotton Ceiling , Vice Magazine, and Tumblr suggestions.?
by Joey Grant
This is a new weekly post of everything I am reading in regards to gender, queer, society, culture and race. It’s all things I read and think others should take the time to read. Some articles are to show how to better your perspective and some to show how people are doing the opposite.
Check out this post from ‘ It’s pronounced metrosexual‘ about Cisgender privileges. If you need to understand the term Cisgender check out this link here. I think articles about privilege are very important because it’s something a lot of us need to learn about including myself.
This article is a lot of things and the publisher is very disrespectful. I do think it’s important to read this and have some community conversations. Read this email thread “The Cotton Ceiling” and you make the call.
Vice magazine made a pretty bad call when posting this clearly misogynists article about how “straight” people should act in “gay” bars. I find this constant erasure of the entire LGBTQ community disturbing and it’s something that hits close to home in Chicago with the recent Wang’s debacle. This is why safe places for all gender expressions is so important, please support your local Queer events.
Also I think Tumblr is a great place to read peoples personal thoughts on gender, race, society and culture. This is my weekly chosen blog to make you have feelings and questions your current perspective. SixtyForty on the Tumblr.
