Marriage equality comes to Denmark
The law banning same-sex couples from marrying in churches Denmark has been over turned! In a vote of 85 to 25 with 2 abstaining, Parliament has legalized marriage equality! Church officials do still have the right to refuse to marry same-sex couples in their churches if they so choose, and if they do so choose the couple will need to find another minister to perform the ceremony.
This is yet another progressive move in the fight for queer equality. Denmark was the fist country to legalize civil unions in 1989.
The word is, same-sex marriage could go into effect as soon as June 15th. All civil unions already performed will be automatically upgraded to married.
